چکیده

Microbially mediated insoluble technetium (Tc) formation was studied using surface water covering paddy fields. Surface water samples were collected from three kinds of flooded paddy soils: andosol, gley soil, and gray lowland soil. Insoluble Tc (> 0.2 μm in size) was formed in all surface water samples and the amounts ranged from 48.7 ± 2.2% of total Tc (gley soil) to 88.5 ± 3.1% (gray lowland soil). However, elimination of microbial cells from the surface water resulted in an extremely low amount of insoluble Tc being formed. This result suggested there were microbial contributions to insoluble Tc formation. In the investigated samples, fungi and bacteria were dominant species among microorganisms. The inhibition of fungal growth resulted in little change in the insoluble Tc amount. In contrast, the inhibition of bacterial growth led to obvious decreases of insoluble Tc amount. Sulfate-reducing bacteria are known to electrochemically reduce and remove Tc from solution. In the surface water samples, the insoluble Tc formation by bacteria other than sulfate-reducing bacteria was also demonstrated, because inhibition of sulfate-reducing bacteria did not significantly influence the formation of insoluble Tc. It was concluded from these results that the indigenous bacterial community in surface water covering paddy fields would affect Tc behavior in this agricultural environment through insoluble Tc formation.

Direct and Indirect Effects of Microbes on Technetium Insolubilization in Paddy Fields

Direct and indirect effects of microorganisms on technetium insolubilization in water covering waterlogged soils were studied. Seven soils were waterlogged and then the water covering the soils were collected for further tracer experiments. The samples in contact with air were incubated with TcO4 at 25 ̊C for 4 to 5 days. After incubation, the samples were sequentially separated into four fracti...

Insolubilization of cadmium in paddy field using atomized iron powder and extracting reagent.

The insolubilization of cadmium in the soil of a naturally cadmium-contaminated paddy field was studied using an atomized iron powder and an extracting reagent. Cadmium in the soil was extracted into the water phase by calcium chloride. The extracted cadmium was deposited on the iron powder. The deposition of cadmium was significantly influenced by calcium chloride, since the surface area of th...

Bioremediation of gasoil by indigenous bacterial strains

Petroleum refining industries produce large amounts of toxic effluents, causing environmental pollution. Iran is an oil-rich country that encounters oil pollution in its soil and water. Bioremediation of these pollutants is an appropriate solution to tackle them, compared to physical and chemical remediation methods. There are some factors that increase the rate of biodegradation; therefore, th...

Biostimulation of indigenous microbial communities for anaerobic transformation of pentachlorophenol in paddy soils of southern China.

This study explored biostimulation mechanisms with an electron donor and a shuttle for accelerating pentachlorophenol (PCP) transformation in iron-rich soils. The results indicated that indigenous microbial communities are important for PCP transformation in soils. Biostimulation of indigenous microbial communities by the addition of lactate and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) led to the e...
